SQ14 Piston

This week at work I have come across a new style of piston and how it connects to the connecting rod. This piston is a older piston and has a design that has no retaining clips for the piston pin. Instead the connecting rod bolts to the piston pin in the middle with 2 bolts. There is not much info on pistons like these. No one else in the shop have ever worked on something like this. We had to clean them up, cracked check, then replace one of the pistons bushings. When replacing the bushing we had to tear the old one out very carefully with punch and chisels. Then the new one was dropped in liquid oxygen and the piston was heated so we could slide it in qickly. After installing the new bushing. We had to modify a pinch to punch the retaining notches on each side ensuring that the bushing won't slide with the pin. then the bushing brace had to be cut and filed down to make smooth so there would be no ruff edges.

SQ14 Slider Injector Valves

This week I learned how to put together and test slider injector valves. On the slider valves I was working on we replaced everything but the safety relief portion on it. On the safety relief I took it apart, cleaned it, put a new spring in and placed it all back together.

SQ14 Rebuilding Engines

These past few weeks I have been really busy and learning a lot at Transmarine. I got back into Washington from Poland a few weeks back. Poland was a great experience working on the main engine on a ship. I worked on cleaning cylinder heads, liners, pistons, and check the cross head and connecting rod bearings. After I got back into Washington I started learning how to clean smaller cylinder heads, taking out valve seats, cleaning and resurfacing valves, honing cylinder liners, and starting to learn how to use the lathe machine. Here are some pictures of some of the things I have been doing.

While I was in the job in Poland the ship was getting a lot of other work done by the ship yard. Here are some of the pictures from some of the work they were doing.

After work we got to walk around GdaƄsk, Poland and see some of the things close to our hotel. I will put up a few photos of Poland too.

SPQ14 CAT 3516

This week I have stayed really busy working on a CAT 3516. I have been doing a power pack on one of the cylinders. I learned a lot on how to measure certain items inside the engine and also how to use the measuring instruments correctly. I have found many issues with the engine I am been working on. I feel confident now measuring items inside the engine and knowing that I have the correct measurement.

SPQ14 Engines

This week we started working on engines in class. We took apart a John deer engine that had a hole in the side of it. We took it apart looking for the failure and what we found was not what we were expecting. We all made guesses and most of them were for a connecting rod. In the end we found out that it was the balancing shaft that failed and we used failure analysis to find out that one of the balancers came loose. That caused extra wear on the shaft and caused the failure.

SPQ14

This week we went deeper into diodes. We started exploring how a diode work and why it only travels in one direction. I have learned a lot on how the diode works internally and that has helped me to better understand what happens when they fail. Here is a video that helped me understand diodes.

SPQ14 Fuel Pumps

This week I started back in class at school. I have started to learn about fuel injection pumps. I took apart a Bosch single-plunger fuel injection pump. I learned how simple these pumps can be and the many different types of pumps.

WQ13 Bobcat Tilt

This week I learned about the pins that allow you to tilt the bucket on a Bobcat. The pins on the Bobcat are tapered. You fill behind it with grease and then pull tight with the bolt and that's what it pivots on.

WQ13 Nomadic Oiler

This week I learned about the oiling system for a air hammer. The Oiler system goes in the line just before the air hammer and as air pushed through small opening at the bottom of the oil reservoir allows the oil to be sucked in to the air system.
